The Four Diagnostic Methods & TCM Analytical Framework
The four diagnostic methods of Chinese Medicine refers to:
(I) Inspection Method– Visual inspect of the patient’s complexion
(II) Auscultation and Olfaction Method – Auditory queues from the body, voice, respiration and scent
(III) Inquire Method – Tailored questions to understand context of the symptoms and ailment
(IV) Palpation Method – Tactile assessment of patient’s physical body (e.g., Pulse, Temperature)
These methods in combination form the foundation of Dr. Wen’s examination and diagnostic approach. Amongst these, Tongue Diagnosis following the Inspection Method and Pulse Diagnosis following the Palpation Method are the most prevalent examination approach used by Dr. Wen. Expect these procedures as part of your initial examination and each following treatment visits.
All of a patient’s vital information collected using the Four Diagnostic Methods will be analyzed by Dr. Wen, along the eight principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine Pattern Identification Framework (i.e., Yin, Yang, Exterior, Interior, Cold, Heat, Deficiency and Excess), to determine the most suitable treatment methods and design the appropriate treatment plan.
